ST. GEORGE, Utah— AnnMarie Torres blasted a pair of 2-run shots while
Brooke Hodgson hit a 3-run blast as the No. 8 Colorado Mesa University Mavericks claimed a 13-4 run-rule victory over Northwest Nazarene University in the morning game before shaking off a slow start to beat Western New Mexico University, 7-1 in the afternoon contest on Friday during second-day action at the Dixie State Easton Classic here at Canyons Softball Complex.

The Mavericks' two wins allowed them to remain unbeaten with an 8-0 record.

Torres, who also hit a homer in Thursday's 8-5 win over Hawai'i-Hilo, now has five on the season after drilling first and third-inning shots as the Mavericks built an early 4-0 lead.Â
Alexandria Dufour, who had started the third by reaching on an error, then hit a 2-run double in the top of the fourth as the Mavericks went up 6-0.

Leading 6-1 through five, the Mavericks then put up an impressive seven runs in the top of the sixth, highlighted by Hodgson's 2-out homer that plated
Maggie Manwarren and Dufour.

Later in the inning,
Bailey Kleespies,
Tegan Woosley and
Lexie Comer all drove in runs in to increase CMU's lead to 13-1.

The Nighthawks (4-6) would then get three runs in the bottom half of the inning but fell short of sending the game to the seventh.

Torres also drew a pair of walks and went 2-for-2 with three runs and a second straight 4-RBI game. The Mavericks finished with 11 hits as a team as Comer went 2-for-2 while Dufour went 2-for-4 at the plate. Manwarren also drew two walks and stole a base while scoring three runs.

Kimbri Herring earned the win for the Mavericks and improved to 2-0 as she spread seven hits and four runs over five-plus innings while striking out four Nighthawks.Â
McKenzie Surface closed the door with two strikeouts in the bottom of the sixth.

Western New Mexico Game

The Mustangs, now 1-7 on the year, took the early lead on a Yasmeen Gastelum homer in the second inning and led the Mavs by that 1-0 margin through three before CMU's bats came alive in the fourth.

Being held to just one hit while leaving four runners on through two innings after drawing three walks, the Mavericks tied the game early in the fourth when Kleespies hit her fourth career homer to tie the game. Redshirt freshman
Sarah Staudle then drew a walk and moved to third on an
Abby Toller double before freshman
Alexa Samuels, in the starting lineup for the first time, drove in Staudle, also starting for the first time in her career, with the go-ahead run.

Later,
Zoe Pakes pinch-hit for Manwarren and delivered a 2-run double to extend the Mavs' new-found lead to 4-1. Hodgson then drove in Manwarren, who re-entered to run, with a sacrifice fly.

Hodgson, who was in the circle throughout, then allowed just two more base runners the rest of the way, erasing one of them with a double play. In the process, she improved to 2-0 as she allowed just six hits and the one run.

The Mavericks also scored two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth as Dufour and Hodgson both hit 2-run doubles.

Manwarren recorded two of the Mavericks' eight total hits as CMU bested the Mustangs for the second time in eight days. The Mavericks had set a school-record for runs scored in a 25-1 season-opening win on Feb. 2.

The Mavericks, wrap up the tournament and the non-conference portion of their regular season schedule on Saturday facing Concordia-Irvine and Cal Baptist at 12:30 and 3 p.m., respectively.
