ST. GEORGE, Utah— The Colorado Mesa University Mavericks won the first game with the long ball and won the second largely with small ball claiming 3-2 and 7-5 Saturday afternoon victories over a pair of California schools to complete the non-conference portion of the regular season schedule with a perfect 10-0 record here at the Dixie State Easton Classic at Canyons Softball Complex.
Â
Currently ranked eighth nationally according to the preseason poll, and likely to move up in the first regular season edition of the NFCA Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll which will be released on Feb. 21, the Mavericks hit back-to-back home runs in the 3-2 win over Concordia-Irvine and then scored four runs via wild pitches, a passed ball and a stolen base in the latter win over Cal Baptist.Â
Â
Both opponents were in the "others receiving votes" category of the NFCA's poll.
Â
CMU also went a perfect 5-0 for the second straight weekend tournament as AnnMarrie Torres went 3-for-6 with two doubles, a homer and four RBI throughout the day. The homer was the fourth of her weekend and the sixth of the season.Â
McKenzie Surface also went the distance in both games earning her fifth and sixth pitching of the season and the 54
th and 55
th of her career.
Â
Concordia-Irvine Game
Â
The Eagles took the initial lead on an Amy Eilefson homer to begin the top of the second. However, the lead was short-lived as Torres and
Zoe Pakes hit back-to-back shots to lead off the bottom half of the inning.
Â
Meanwhile, Surface was dealing striking out five straight and retiring 11 straight Eagles after giving up the homer before getting out of a minor 2-on, 2-out jam after back-to-back singles in the top of the fifth.
The Mavs then added what would be an important insurance run as
Abby Toller was hit by a pitch before stealing second and scoring on a 2-out
Maggie Manwarren double.
Â
With a 3-1 cushion, the Mavericks would surrender a run in top of the sixth on a Eilefson sacrifice fly to right but were able to close out the game as Surface retired the final four Eagle batters.
Â
Surface finished the game with a season-high matching 10 strikeouts and allowed just five hits without giving up a free pass. The Mavericks also combined for five hits.
Â
Grayson Harvey, the PacWest Conference's Preseason Pitcher of the Year, suffered the loss for the 6-2 Eagles after going two inning.
Â
Cal Baptist Game
Â
The Lancers would take an early 3-0 lead through three innings thanks to home runs by Hannah Thieroff and Halle Rosario before the Mavericks ran their way to a 3-3 tie in the top of the fourth.
Â
Brooke Hodgson led off with a walk and scored on a Torres double.Â
Alexa Samuels, who came into run for Torres, then scored on a 1
st-and-3
rd situation when
Kellie Mrofcza stole second while moving to third on the play. Mrofcza then scored the tying run moments later on a passed ball.
Â
In the top of the fifth, CMU added a run and took a 4-3 lead as Hodgson scored on a 2-out wild pitch after reaching on a double, her eighth of the campaign.
Â
The Mavericks then added three more runs in the top of the seventh as Manwarren singled up the middle before moving to second when
Alexandria Dufour drew a walk. Hodgson bunted both over before Torres drove them in with her double.
Â
The Maverick sophomore then scored the team's final run on a wild pitch later in the inning.
Â
The Lancers did valiantly battle in the bottom of the seventh scoring two runs on four hits and had the potential game-tying run in scoring position before Surface got a game-ending groundout.
Â
The Mavericks were out hit 7-5 in the game as Surface tallied two more strikeouts. Ciara Stapp (2-2) took the loss for the 5-3 Lancers after giving up seven walks and three wild pitches.
Â
The Mavericks will take next weekend off before playing their home and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference-opening series against Chadron State on Feb. 24 and 25.
