It was only fitting for
CJ Davis to score his 1,000
th career point off a shot from long range, and he did just that with 5:15 to go in the first half. However, that was the brightest point in the night as the Mavericks fell to the Grizzlies 96-83 in the team's second to last home game of the season.
Â
Colorado Mesa University opened up the first half on a role, building an 11-2 lead in the first four minutes of action. Adams State University (ASU) was not looking for a repeat performance from earlier in the season though, and they fought their way back into the game to take the lead four minutes later (16-15).
Â
From that moment on the Mavericks would bring the game into a tie on two occasions, but never was able to regain the lead from the Grizzlies. They entered the half down three (42-39), but the second half was ASU's from start to finish. They lead by as many as 16 points in the second half to ultimately win the game by 13.
Â
Despite both teams shooting 48 percent from the field, and the Mavericks finishing with more free throws attempted, it was the three-point line that burned CMU on Friday night. While the Mavericks finished with five makes, the Grizzlies had 11 made shots from deep.
Â
Bench scoring was another key in this game as the Grizzlies finished with 39 points off the bench compared to CMU's 13.
Â
Davis finished his big night going 5-8 from the field for 15 points and three assists.
Connor Nichols was CMU's leading scorer with 23 points and also contributed a team high seven boards.
Emilio Acedo and
Damon Dubots also finished in double figures with 14 and 12 respectively.
Â
CMU now sits at 11-13 on the year and 7-11 in the conference. Tomorrow will be the final home game of the year for the Mavericks, and they will be taking on No. 14 Fort Lewis. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
