It was senior night for the Mavericks, and
CJ Davis did everything in his power to try and pull off the upset against the No. 14 Fort Lewis College (FLC) Skyhawks. With two seconds remaining, Colorado Mesa University was inbounding the ball on their base line down by three. They were able to heave the ball down court to the open
Connor Nichols at the free throw line, who tossed the ball back to Davis who heaved up a three-point attempt with less than a second remaining and banked it in to send the game to overtime tied at 82. The magic was short lived for CMU however as the Skyhawks went into overtime and came out with a 94-89 victory.
Â
The Mavericks were able to lead by as many as six points in this game and went into halftime up one (37-36). FLC was able to come back in the second half and built up a nine-point lead with 10:32 to go in regulation.
Â
Despite the high scoring, both teams only shot 38 percent from the field. However, the teams combined to take 92 free throws over the course of the game. CMU managed to hit 37 of theirs while the Skyhawks drained 42.
Â
Davis finished the game with 19 points (16 in the second half) on 4-8 shooting from the field and 8-8 from the free throw line in his final game at Brownson Arena.
Â
Davis was one of four Mavericks to finish in double digits on the night.
Damon Dubots was the Mavericks leading scorer with 22 points and nine rebounds. Nichols was third on the team with 18 points and seven boards.
Emilio Acedo was the last player to finish in double figures with 17 points after going 11-11 from the free throw line.
Â
CMU now sits at 11-14 overall on the year and 7-12 in the conference. The Mavericks will now play their final three games on the road to finish out the 2017-18 season.
