After the first 20 minutes of action, the Mavericks were looking like they were going to be able to knock of the 17-3 Griffins on their home court and extend their win streak to four games. However, a huge second half by Dayon Goodman brought the Griffins back to win the contest 83-70.
Â
A balanced attack was key for Colorado Mesa University in the first half.
Connor Nichols,
Damon Dubots and
Emilio Acedo each had 10 points at the break and shot a combined 13-20 from the field. That combined with 26 points in the paint helped secure the Mavericks a 39-32 lead heading into the break.
Â
The lead wouldn't last long for CMU however, as the Griffins would open up the second half on an 11-4 run to tie the game up at 43 with 15 minutes to play. From there, Goodman got hot. Over the next two minutes, he scored seven points and assisted on two other scores to increase their lead to 12 points (55-43). CMU would never regain the lead for the remainder of the game, falling behind as many as 19.
Â
Goodman finished the game with 37 points (24 in the second half) to lead all scorers. Nichols finished as the Mavericks leading scorer with 24 to go along with six rebounds. Dubots was second on the team with 14 and Acedo with 13.
Â
In the first half, the Mavericks were able to shoot a remarkable 57 percent from the field and held the hot shooting Griffins to 40 percent. In the second half it was reversed with the Mavericks only able to complete 38 percent of their field goals to the Griffins 53. A large reason for the drop-in percentage for the Mavericks was due to the Griffins increased defense on the inside. After having 26 points in the paint in the first half, CMU was held to a mere six in the second.
Â
The loss moves CMU to 11-12 overall on the year and 7-10 in the conference with five games to go in the regular season. Next weekend will be the Mavericks final home stand of the year with games against Adams State University and Fort Lewis College.
