PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Colorado Mesa women's tennis team closed out the Firestorm Classic with a win over the PacWest's Holy Names Hawks 6-3 at the Paseo Racquet Club.
The two teams played singles first today and Colorado Mesa came away with a 4-2 lead.
Taylor Hershey (No. 3),
Kylie Simons (No. 5), and
Carolena Campos (No. 6) all won their match in straight sets.
Kristen Kirby had to work a little harder in her match at No. 1 singles but came away with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 win.
The Mavericks closed out the match winning two of the three doubles matches. Kirby and Hershey defeated Jahan Bayramova and Domonique Ernst at No. 1 doubles with an 8-4 win while Simons and Campos teamed up to win at No. 3 doubles 8-7 (9-7).
LATE SATURDAY RECAP
Colorado Mesa dropped a 6-3 decision to host Arizona Christian in the opening dual of the day.
Rebecca Osterberg and
Nicole Kitsuse earned an 8-7 (7-5) win at No. 2 doubles for the Mavericks lone point of doubles action.
Kristen Kirby picked up a 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 straight set win at No. 1 singles while
Alexi Klabunde earned a 6-3, 6-3 straight set win at No. 6 singles.
In the night match, Colorado Mesa came away with a 7-2 victory over former RMAC rival Western New Mexico.
The Mavericks won two of the three doubles matches for the early 2-1 lead. Kirby and Hershey won 8-3 at No. 1 doubles and Campos and Simons earned an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles.
Colorado Mesa cleaned up the singles matches, winning five of the six matches. Kirby (No. 1), Hershey (No. 4), Campos (No. 5) and Klabunde (No. 6) won in straight sets while
Rebecca Osterberg won in three sets at No. 2 singles.
Colorado Mesa will take on RMAC foe Colorado Christian on Saturday at 11am at the Elliott Tennis Center.
