Griffin Scores Three Times in 17-9 Win

Colorado Mesa University opened up their two-game set this week with a matchup against Mars Hill University (MHU) Thursday afternoon. And the Mavericks were able to prove that they are one of the best teams in the nation, with a 17-9 victory over MHU.

After falling behind 2-1 with six minutes remaining in the first quarter, the Mavericks rallied off five goals to take a 6-2 lead heading into the second. Johnny Cary was able to score two for CMU during that stretch. In the second quarter, both teams scored twice so the Mavericks went into halftime with a four-goal advantage (8-4).

In the third quarter it was all Mavericks to start. Jack Griffin scored his fifth and sixth goals of the season to help give the Mavericks an 11-4 lead with 4:55 left to play in the quarter. MHU would be able to tack one on with 58 seconds remaining before Michael Dasch Jr. finished off the quarter for the Mavericks with a goal with seven seconds remaining.

CMU effectively put the finishing touches on their second win of the season in the fourth quarter, opening up the scoring with three unanswered goals. That gave the Mavericks a 10-goal lead with 12:39 to play. MHU tried to claw back in but it wasn't enough, allowing CMU to walk away with an eight-goal victory.

The Mavericks finished the game with 24 more shots than MHU, thanks to their dominant offensive performance. CMU also finished the game with 20 more shots on goal for the game.

Twelve Mavericks scored in the matchup, led by Griffin who finished with three goals and one assist on the day. Christian Cherry was in goal for the Mavericks who received his first win of the season. He finished the game with six saves and seven goals allowed in 53 minutes of action.

CMU will now look to their matchup on Saturday against No.3 Lenoir-Rhyne University (LRU). LRU is coming off defeating the No.1 team in the nation Limestone. The game is set for 12 p.m. start time in Hickory N.C.
