Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – #4 Colorado Mesa used a seven run sixth inning to propel them to a 14-5 win over the #15 Dixie State Trailblazers on Friday afternoon in the home opener at Suplizio Field in a battle of ranked teams.
Reagan Todd put the Mavericks on top in the first inning after belting a two-run home run to right center field. The home run hit the netting, three-quarters of the way up, in front of the video board and scored
Garrett Ball who reached base just in front of Todd.
The Mavericks led 4-0 heading into the sixth inning where they would add seven runs (five earned) on just three hits. Freshman
Jordan Stubbings delivered the big hit in the inning. Stubbings, in his first collegiate at-bat, laced a sharply hit ball that hit third base and trickled into left field for a two-run double.
Keenan Eaton remained hot for Colorado Mesa. The senior finished 4-for-5 with four runs driven in and a double in the seventh inning.
Ball,
Tyler Sandoval and
Nick Borowski all finished with two hits.
The run support was plenty for Maverick ace
Kyle Leahy. The Boulder native allowed five hits, walked one and struck out six in seven innings of shutout baseball. He allowed only one runner to reach second base on a two-out double in the second inning.
Colorado Mesa improved to 3-2 on the season while the Trailblazers dropped to 4-3 on the year.
The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at Noon at Suplizio Field.
