LARAMIE, Wyo.— True freshman
Bracken Lovell, a former 2-time state champion from Delta, Utah, went 4-0 and won the 133-pound bracket in the Amateur Division of the Cowboy Open held Saturday at the University of Wyoming's War Memorial Fieldhouse.
Lovell was one of three Mavericks to place amongst the top four joining 197-pound runner-up
Hunter Mooring and
Nolan Krone, who placed fourth at 184 pounds. Both of them are redshirt freshmen.
Lovell posted a pair of bonus-point victories in his opening two matches pinning Boburjon Berdiyorov of Northwest (Wyo.) College at 4:48 before scoring an 18-1 technical fall victory over Northern Colorado's Cameron Santiago in the quarterfinals. Lovell then scored a 9-5 decision over Dessmund Prospero of Otero Junior College in the semifinals before defeating Western Wyoming's Joey Revelli by a 6-3 score in the title match.
Mooring went 3-1 on the day, claiming three bonus-point wins. He defeated Draven Bollinger of Northwest Kansas Technical College by a 16-0 technical fall margin before pinning CSU-Pueblo's Daren Hughes in just 57 seconds.
Mooring then defeated Noah Dohm of Otero by an 18-6 major decision margin before falling to Jayden Woodruff, an unattached wrestler from Utah Valley University, in the final.
Krone went 4-2 losing his first and last matches while recording four straight victories including a pair of first-period pins in the consolation bracket.
In the Elite Division,
Benny Pachello and Patrick Romero each won two matches to lead the Mavericks. They were wrestling at 141 and 184 pounds, respectively.
The Mavericks will now return home for their first two duals hosting Cloud County (Kan.) Community College and the University of Nebraska-Kearney, ranked second in Division II on Thursday and Friday evenings at 6 p.m.
