Mavs crush UCCS

Gilfert records 20 kills in 3-set sweep

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— Kasie Gilfert recorded 20 kills and hit .643 while Camille Smith and Katie Scherr combined for 21 additional kills as the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks claimed a 3-set (25-21, 25-12, 25-19) sweep over the UCCS Mountain Lions on Friday night here in the Gallogly Events Center.

The Mavericks hit .301 as a team, including at a torrid .567 clip in the second set, and improved to 18-6 overall and to 13-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play heading into a Saturday evening showdown with conference-leading Colorado School of Mines (21-3, 15-1 RMAC) in Golden.

Dixie State is still second set in the RMAC at 14-2 while Regis, which plays the Trailblazers in St. George, Utah on Saturday, remained in a third place tie with the Mavericks, who are now 13-1 in 3-set matches.

The Mountain Lions fell to 11-13 overall and to 9-7 in RMAC play.

Gilfert, the nation's leader in hitting percentage, was a perfect 9-for-9 in the second set and finished with 20 or more kills for the fourth time this season.  She also connected for seven kills on 10 swings in the first set and was hitting at a sizzling .842 at the intermission before cooling the third set, which saw the Mavericks held to a .125 team hitting percentage as the Mountain Lions recorded all three of their blocks in the final frame.

However, the Mavericks also played well defensively holding the Mountain Lions to .091 hitting throughout the evening while finishing with a 50-35 advantage in digs while doubling-up the hosts, 6-3 in blocking.

Gilfert and Natalee Todd each had three blocks to lead the net defense.

Meanwhile, Taylor Woods tallied 18 digs wile setter Ara Norwood registered her fourth double-double of the campaign with 27 assists and 12 digs to lead the back row.

Smith finished the match with 11 kills and hit .421 while Scherr had 10 kills while helping the Mavericks to a 42-29 win in that statistical category.
