Mavericks clinch RMAC Tourney spot with 4-set win at Adams

Gilfert's 20 kills and three double-doubles pace victory

ALAMOSA, Colo.— Kasie Gilfert had another impressive night, putting down 20 kills and a career-high matching seven blocks, including three of the solo variety, while hitting .500 to lead the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks to a 4-set (25-16, 25-14, 27-29, 25-21) Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference volleyball win at Adams State University on Friday night here in Plachy Hall.

The Mavericks also received double-doubles from three different players and finished with large 62-48 and 75-57 advantage in total kills and digs, respectively.

With the win, CMU improved to 17-5 overall and to 12-2 in the RMAC and clinched a spot in the RMAC Tournament while remaining just a match out of first place in the conference standings.  Adams State fell to 8-14 overall and 5-9 in the RMAC with the loss.

Gilfert, who leads the NCAA Division II statistics in hitting percentage, needed just 36 swings to record her third 20-plus kill effort of her CMU debut season.  The redshirt sophomore transfer from Division I Northern Arizona is now hitting .442 on the year.

Meanwhile, senior outside hitter MacKenzie Edwards recorded her sixth double-double of the season and the 36th of her career while moving into the No. 5 position in CMU's rally-scoring era record book for career kills with 1,031.  She had 14 kills and a season-high 19 digs on Friday.

Both Maverick setters also recorded double-doubles as Ara Norwood doled out a career-high 31 assists and recorded 12 digs while Samantha Ritter chipped in 22 assists and 11 digs.

Libero Taylor Woods also tallied 20 kills while Katie Scherr and Natalee Todd also contributed significantly on the offensive end.  Scherr had nine kills while Todd hit an errorless .875 putting down seven kills on just eight swings.

The Mavericks hit .223 as a team throughout the night and were on point in the first two sets with .333 and .316 hitting percentages.

The Grizzlies would then go on to fight off a pair of match-points at 24-23 and 25-24 as Hannah Goddard recorded two of her team-high 15 kills moments before Julianna Zamora put down back-to-back kills to finish off a 29-27 third set battle.

However, the Mavs got out to a 6-0 fourth set start before the Grizzlies came roaring back to eventually take an 18-17 lead.

However, an Allison Smith kill and Wood service ace, put the Mavericks up 19-18 as the visitors never relinquished the lead again, finishing off the match with a Gilfert kill and a Smith/Gilfert block of Goddard.

The Mavericks will continue on the road playing at Fort Lewis on Saturday evening at 5 p.m. in Durango.  The Skyhawks (7-11, 7-7 RMAC) swept Western Colorado on Friday night to win for the third straight match and for the sixth time in the last eight.
