#14 ThunderWolves Outlast Mavericks

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa dropped a hard fought 36-14 contest to the No. 14 CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference football action at Stocker Stadium. The Mavericks fall to 4-3 on the season and 3-3 in the conference.

The Mavericks jumped out to a 7-0 lead after starting quarterback Rope Ruel found Peter Anderson on 65-yard bomb. Ruel made his first career start in the place of an injured Eystin Salum who snapped a streak of 17 straight starts that dated back to the 2016 season.

Anderson extended his 100-yard receiving game streak to five after hauling in four catches for 136 yards and a touchdown. He averaged 34 yards per catch on the day.

CSU-Pueblo scored the next 22 points unanswered before Jonathon Beverly found pay dirt from 10-yards out to make it 22-14. Beverly netted 77 yards on a team-high 17 carries.

The ThunderWolves scored the final 14 points of the contest to put it out of reach.

Turnovers hampered the Mavericks all day as they threw two interceptions and lost a pair of fumbles.

The defense did an outstanding job of limiting one of the best offenses in the RMAC. CSU-Pueblo entered the game as the top offense in the conference but Colorado Mesa limited the Pack to 380 yards of offense and 193 yards on the ground.

Tommy Saager turned in his best effort since his sophomore season. The senior totaled 17 tackles, the second most in his career and most since he had 18 against Midwestern State in his sophomore season (2015).

Redshirt freshman Greyson Matalus turned in 12 tackles.

DJ White finished with a season-high five quarterback hurries.

The Mavericks will be on the road for their longest road trip next weekend when they travel to Spearfish, S.D. to take on the Black Hills State. The Yellow Jackets are coming off their first win of the season after a 42-7 win over New Mexico Highlands in snowy Spearfish.
