Colorado Mesa University rebounded after their loss on Friday night against the visiting Colorado Christian University (CCU) on Saturday. A huge second half from the Mavericks helped vault them to an 85-70 victory.

The teams were going back and forth through the first 10 minutes of the game, which the teams notched up at 20 a piece. CMU was able to use the final 10 minutes of the first half to gain a six-point lead heading into halftime, up 40-34. The Mavericks were able to share the ball in the half, finishing with seven Mavericks having points on the board and 11 assists on 14 made baskets.

In the second half, the Mavericks were able to keep their momentum that they gained as they closed out the first and pushed their lead up to 15 points (51-36). However, the Cougars were not going away easily. CCU went on a 19-4 run to cut the Maverick lead to four (59-55) with 11 minutes remaining. The Mavericks never let the game get any closer than that though, and they would go on to outscore the Cougars 26-15 over the final 11 minutes to seal the victory.

Defensively the Mavericks were all over the Cougars shooters the entire night. They were able to hold CCU to a mere 42 percent shooting from the field, including going 8-23 from the three-point line. CMU was also able to force the Cougars into committing 16 turnovers on the night, which the Mavericks were able to turn into 23 points.

CJ Davis led the Mavericks with 24 points on the night, after going 4-8 from three. He was followed by
Connor Nichols (19) and
Emilio Acedo (18) to lead the Mavericks. As a team, CMU finished with 19 assists on 29 made field goals on the night.

The victory ended the Mavericks five game home losing streak, and moved them to 7-9 overall and 3-7 in the RMAC. Next up for the Mavericks is two games on the road against Metro State University and University of Colorado at Colorado Springs next weekend.
