Colorado Mesa University was looking to pull off the upset on Friday night against the No. 22 ranked Colorado School of Mines (CSM). Despite a 29-point performance from
Emilio Acedo, the Mavericks fell short in the game, falling by a final score of 82-72.
Â
The Mavericks were looking good through the first seven minutes of action, building up a 17-9 lead thanks to a fastbreak three-point shot by
Kolton Peterson. However, Mines was able to battle back into the game in order to take a 38-35 lead entering halftime. Acedo and
Connor Nichols had good first halves for the Mavericks to keep them in the game. Acedo led the team with 13 points at the break while Nichols added another 10.
Â
The second half was another story for CMU. After holding the Orediggers to a mere 38 percent shooting in the first half, CSM turned their offensive game around in the second. As a team, they shot 54 percent from the floor and 56 percent from behind the three-point line. Meanwhile, the Mavericks only shot 39 percent from the field in the half, and only 2-8 from long range. That allowed CSM to outscore the Mavericks 44-37 in the half and ultimately walk away with the 10-point victory.
Â
CMU finished with three players in double figures for the night, compared to CSM's four. Acedo led all scorers on the night with 29. Nichols finished with 19 points and seven boards, while
Damon Dubots added another 10 points.
Â
Mason Baker and Ben Sonnefeld led the charge for CSM, combining for 38 points on the night and 14-26 shooting from the field.
Â
The loss moves CMU to 7-9 overall on the season and 3-7 in the conference. It also gives the Mavericks their fifth straight home loss. They will look to break that streak tomorrow night against Colorado Christian University. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
