SALT LAKE CITY, Utah— The Colorado Mesa University volleyball team won their sixth straight match and moved to 2-0 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play with a 3-set sweep (25-19, 25-20, 25-19) of Westminister College, Friday night here in the Griffins' Behnken Fieldhouse.
Â
The Mavericks are now 8-2 overall heading into a 4-match home-stand, which will start against nationally-ranked Regis University, currently 9-1, next Friday in Brownson Arena.
Â
Katie Scherr led a balanced Maverick attack in the win over the Griffins with 11 kills on a .360 hitting effort. She also had five of the Mavericks' season-high-matching 10 service aces and tallied six digs and two blocks. Outside hitter
MacKenzie Edwards was just a kill shy of her fifth double-double of the season and tallied 11 digs while
Natalee Todd pitched in eight kills.Â
Â
Libero
Taylor Woods tallied a match-high 15 digs to lead the Maverick defense while sophomore setter
Samantha Ritter distributed 37 assists while coming up with eight days.
Â
The Griffins (3-6, 0-1 RMAC) were led by 15 kills from Audrey Green.
Â
With the first set tied at 5, the Mavericks went on a 7-1 run to take command. They built the lead to as many as nine points (22-13) before Edwards finished the set off with a kill.
Â
The Griffins would be the aggressors in the second set and got out to 4-1 and 6-4 leads before a pair of 5-0 Maverick runs allowed CMU to build a 15-8 lead that would be more than enough for the Mavericks to go into the intermission with a 2-0 lead.
Â
Early in the third set, Scherr tallied back-to-back service aces at the end of a 4-0 Maverick run, which led to a 10-4 lead. The Griffins would get within three later on multiple occasions later in the set before a 5-0 CMU run put the Mavericks on match point. After giving up three points, the Mavericks then finished the match on a Scherr kill.
Â
The Mavericks have now started RMAC play with a 2-0 mark in each of the last four years and are 4-1 against the Griffins since they joined the RMAC in 2015.
