PUEBLO, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa women's tennis team opened up the fall season with a split today (Sept. 15) at Centennial High School.
In the opening match of the day, Colorado Mesa fell 9-0 to former RMAC member Nebraska-Kearney. The Lopers took all three doubles matches (8-3, 8-2, 8-4) and all six singles matches.
Kristen Kirby dropped a tough match at No. 1 singles to Loper Ana Royo. Kirby dropped the first set 6-2 but battled back to win the second set 6-4 forcing a tiebreaker. The sophomore dropped the tiebreaker 10-7.
In the second match of the day, Colorado Mesa rebounded with a win against another former RMAC member in Fort Hays State, 6-3. The Mavericks took two doubles matches and four of the six singles matches.
Kirby and
Emily Beckley earned the 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles while teammates
Nicole Kitsuse and
Georgia Hansen earned an injury default win at No. 3 doubles.
Kirby won her match at No. 1 singles, coasting to a straight set win 6-1, 6-2.
Fellow sophomore
Rebecca Osterberg picked up a win at No. 3 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 straight set win over Macy Moyers.
Newcomer
Kylie Simons picked up an injury default win at No. 6 singles.
The Mavericks (1-1) will close out the opening weekend with two more matches in Pueblo. The will take on regional foes Texas-Permian Basin and Newman.
