Mavericks Fall in Extras to STAC

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – No. 2 Colorado Mesa dropped a 3-2, ten-inning heartbreaker to No. 16  St. Thomas Aquinas in the NCAA Division II Championships on Tuesday evening at AirHogs Stadium.

The two teams last met in the 2014 NCAA Championships with Colorado Mesa coming out on top in a 5-4, ten-inning affair.

The two pitchers were locked in a pitcher's duel from the get go between Colorado Mesa's JR McDermott and St. Thomas Aquinas' Chris Cepeda. In the end, neither would factor into the decision.

Both would go six and two-thirds innings and allow one run. McDermott allowed five hits, walked three and struck out nine while Cepeda allowed seven hits, walked two and struck out three.

With the first strikeout of the game, McDermott reached 100 strikeouts on the season. He is the first Maverick since Nolan Snell in 2012 to accomplish the feat.

Colorado Mesa had plenty of opportunities to score early in the game.

The first opportunity came in the third inning with the bases loaded and no outs, the Mavericks ended up with an infield pop-up followed by a double play.

The Mavericks took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning after a RBI single by JJ Carr that scored Kevan Elcock from third. Elcock reached on a bloop single to left followed by a throwing error on a sharp hit by Zach McLeod.

Colorado Mesa would strand the bases loaded after filling them with one-out. A fielder's choice and a fly out ended the threat.

St. Thomas would tie it up in the top of the seventh on a single to center field by Nick Lucchese.

The score would remain that way until the tenth when St. Thomas Aquinas' Juan Adorno doubled in the go-ahead run followed by an RBI single by Anthony Maisano to make it 3-1.

Colorado Mesa would keep the game alive on an RBI single by Kevan Elcock in the bottom of the tenth inning. The RBI cut the Spartan lead 3-2 but that was all the closer they would get.

Elcock finished the game 2-for-5 with a run scored and a run driven in. Andrew Contreras and Zach McLeod each finished with two hits.

The Mavericks stranded 12 runners on base that included eight in scoring position. Of those eight runners, six of those were in scoring position with less than two outs.

Colorado Mesa committed four errors in the game.

The Mavericks fall to 49-11 on the season while the Spartans move to 44-15.

Colorado Mesa will play an elimination game at 6pm (MDT) tomorrow night against No. 1 Delta State.
