GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – Colorado Mesa's
Chris Ramirez pitched a complete game in a 6-2 win over top-ranked Delta State in an elimination game in the NCAA Division II Baseball Championships at AirHogs Stadium.
Ramirez (10-1) fired his second straight complete game allowing just two runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out seven while throwing only 113 pitches.
Pitching coach Jeff Rodgers went out to check on Ramirez one time in the ninth inning but the conversation was short and Ramirez got the final two outs on a strikeout and an infield pop up.
Like last night,
JJ Carr lit the fire of the Maverick offense in the top of the third with an RBI double that scored
Matt Haggerty to give Colorado Mesa the lead. Haggerty reached on a two-out single up the middle.
Colorado Mesa added to their lead in the top of the seventh.
Lane LaCrone led off the inning with a double down the third base line that rattled around in the corner.
Kevan Elcock moved him to third and
Zach McLeod followed with a RBI single up the middle to make it 2-0.
Later in the inning,
PJ Gonzalez singled to right field scoring
Matt Haggerty to make it 3-0 Mavericks after six and a half innings.
Delta State would answer in the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run off the bat of Josh Russell that cleared the left field wall.
Colorado Mesa would answer in a big way.
Kyle Serrano led off the inning with a single. With one out,
Lane LaCrone executed a perfect hit and run, moving Serrano from first to third.
Kevan Elcock uncorked a three-run bomb that hit the Sports Bar and Grill in left field, making the score 6-1.
Delta State would get one back in the ninth and threaten, stranding a pair of runners on the bases when the game ended.
LaCrone finished the game 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored while Elcock went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored.
The win gives the Mavericks a school record 50 wins on the season eclipsing the 2007 total of 49 wins. They are 50-11 on the season while Delta State ends their season at 45-13.
Colorado Mesa will be back in action tomorrow night as they take on West Chester at 6pm (MDT) in the final four.
