LAST WEEKEND
Colorado Mesa swept straight throught the NCAA South Central Region Tournament on their way to their third Regional Championship. The pitching staff allowed just five runs in the four games and had a 6:1 strikeout to walk ratio during the tournament. Kevan Elcock led the offensive attack even though he played in just two games. He batted .429 and went 2-for-3 in the semifinal win over Angelo State.Â
AGAINST THE FIELD
The Mavericks have played just two teams in the tournament field. They hold a 7-7 record against UC-San Diego including one win in the postseason (2007). CMU defeated St. Thomas Aquinas 5-4 to open the 2014 CWS in Cary, N.C.
CWS APPEARANCES
The Mavericks are making their third appearance at the Division II College World Series. They made their first appearance in 2009, the first year Cary hosted the tournament, where they went 1-2. They defeated Belmont Abbey 7-2 to open the tournament before falling to Emporia State (L, 5-2) and then fell in the rematch with Belmont Abbey (L, 9-2). The Mavericks reached the National Title game in 2014 falling to Southern Indiana in 12 innings 3-2. They defeated St. Thomas Aquinas, Seton Hill, and Tampa along the way.
MAJOR AWARD FINALISTS
Kyle Leahy and Bligh Madris were each named a first-team All-Region recipient on all three major outlets. Madris was named the Region Player of the Year by all three outlets and was also named a finalist for the Tino Martinez Award which is given to Division II's most outstanding player. Colorado Mesa's Austin Kaiser won the award in 2014. Leahy picked up ABCA Region Pitcher of the Year honors and was named a finalist for the Brett Tomko Award given to the most outstanding pitcher in Division II.
PITCHING DOMINANCE
Pitching was the name of the game for Colorado Mesa in the NCAA South Central Region Tournament. The Maverick staff allowed just five total runs in 36 innings during the tournament. They struck out 36 batters while walking just six and allowed opponents to bat just .202 in those games.
MAY DAY
Senior closer Tyler Day has been lights out in the month of May. Day is 1-0 with two saves in the month and has allowed just two hits and a walk while striking out 12. Opponents are hitting just .080 off of him.
NATIONAL RANKINGS
The Mavericks sit at No. 2 in this week's Collegiate Baseball Newspapaer rankings just behind No. 1 Delta State. North Georgia is third followed by UC San Diego who checks in at No. 4. West Chester is sixth while Colorado Mesa's first round opponent Quincy is in at No. 14.
LINEUP LOGIC
It took a little while but skipper Chris Hanks finally settled on a lineup and it has worked out well. When PJ Gonzalez hits leadoff, the Mavericks are 26-2. When JJ Carr hits in the two-hole, they are 24-1 and when Kyle Serrano hits in the three-hole, they are 30-1.
ALUMNI UPDATE
2005 Colorado Mesa Maverick Sergio Romo signed a one-year, three million dollar deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Romo spent the first nine seasons of his big league career with the San Francisco Giants and recently competed in the World Baseball Classic for Team Mexico, his second WBC appearance.
