LAST WEEKEND
Colorado Mesa swept the RMAC Tournament field in four straight games to claim their fourth straight tournament championship. They outscored their opponents 46-13 in the four games The Mavericks batted .392 and limited their opponents to a .187 average in the tournament. The pitching staff struck out 37 batters while only walking eight.
SCOUTING THE FIELD
Colorado Mesa holds an all-time record of 3-4 against teams in the South Central Region field. They own a 2-1 record against their first round opponent in St. Edward's and a 1-0 mark against West Texas A&M. They have never faced Arkansas Fort Smith.
REGIONAL TOURNAMENT
The Mavericks are making their 17th appearance in the NCAA Tournament. It is also their ninth straight season and they have made the tournament field in 13 of the last 14 seasons. Angelo State enters the tournament as the top seed and host with West Texas No. 3, Lubbock Christian No. 4, St. Edward's No. 5 and Arkansas-Fort Smith, in their first tournament, the No. 6 seed.
WHEN IT COUNTS
Senior Andrew Contreras has made the most of his opportunities in the postseason. He is batting .429 with three doubles, a triple and two home runs in 11 postseason games. He has drove in 14, scored 12 runs and has not recorded a hit in just one game in the tournaments.
BLIGH GUY
Redshirt sophomore Bligh Madris was named the RMAC Tournament MVP after batting .556 with two home runs, eight runs scored, adn six RBIs. He drew seven walks and upped his season batting average to .455, which is a tie for the top spot nationwide David Vinsky of Northwood.
HIT MACHINE
Colorado Mesa ranks second nationwide in total hits with 625. Georgia College is the national leader with 649 hits.
NATIONAL RANKINGS
The Mavericks moved up to No. 5 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll and held steady in the NCBWA poll at No. 12. Perfect Game has the Mavericks at No. 8.
WATCH ME WHIP
The Mavericks are among the national leaders in WHIP (Walks plus hits over innings pitched) WHIP is an indicator of how many baserunners you allow in an inning. Colorado Mesa ranks third with a 1.18 WHIP while staff ace Kyle Leahy ranks eighth with a 0.88 WHIP.
ALUMNI UPDATE
2005 Colorado Mesa Maverick Sergio Romo signed a one-year, three million dollar deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Romo spent the first nine seasons of his big league career with the San Francisco Giants and was recently competed in the World Baseball Classic for Team Mexico, his second WBC appearance.
ON DECK
If Colorado Mesa was fortunate enough to win the NCAA South Central Regional in San Angelo, They would return to the Lone Star State for the NCAA Division II World Series that will be held in Grand Prairie, Texas. It would be the Mavericks third appearance in the National Championship Tournament.
