RMAC Pods This Weekend

Colorado Mesa will close out their second 12-game home stand of the season with RMAC Pod play where they will host Colorado Christian and Colorado School of Mines. The Mavericks swept Colorado Christian and have yet to play Colorado School of Mines.

Colorado School of Mines was the RMAC regular season runner-up a year ago after falling to the Mavericks on the final day of the regular season. The Orediggers came up one spot short of reaching their first NCAA Tournament as well.

LAST WEEKEND
Colorado Mesa swept a four-game series from the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys at Suplizio Field. For the second straight weekend, the Mavericks limited the RMAC's top hitting team to a sub-.200 batting average. The Cowboys batted just .192, had 23 hits, scored 11 runs and struck out an astounding 52 times in the series. The offense batted .366 with 12 extra base-hits including six home runs.

SCOUTING THE COMPETITION
The Mavericks will play both Colorado Mines and Colorado Christian this weekend in RMAC Pod Play. Mines comes into the series with the second best batting average in the RMAC at .330 but has had its struggles on the mound with a 6.78 ERA, good enough for sixth. CMU swept Colorado Christian in a four-game series earlier this season but are coming off a 3-1 series win over Adams State last weekend havng scored 58 runs in the series.

RMAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sophomore pitched Kyle Leahy was named the RMAC Pitcher of the Week after his start against NMHU. Leahy struck out a career-high 15 batters and allowed just four hits in his eight innings of work. He also picked up NCBWA South Central Region Pitcher of the Week honors as well.

WILL THE THRILL
This weekend saw the return of first baseman Will Dixon. The sophomore was nursing a bad shoulder but returned to hit .571 on the series with four hits and two runs driven in. Dixon has started nine games on the season and carries a .333 batting average with two doubles and eight RBIs.

THOU SHALL NOT STEAL
Catcher Kyle Serrano has thrown out over 48 percent of would be basestealers this season. Opponents have only stolen nine bases successfully this season. As a team, the Mavericks have thrown out 46 percent of all runners.

EXTRAS
The Mavericks are 3-0 in extra inning contests after last weekend's 11-10 win in game three over the Cowboys. They defeated Dixie State in 12 innings to open the season and took down Point Loma in game two of their doubleheader in 10 innings.

STRIKEOUT-TO-WALKS
Colorado Mesa moved up to fifth in the country in strikeout to walk ratio at 3.59. The Mavericks have struck out 262 batters and walked just 73. This past weekend the struck out 52 batters while walking just 14.  

NATIONAL RANKINGS
The Mavericks climbed six spots in this week's edition of the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll to No. 15. They moved up one spot in the Perfect Game poll to No. 12 and maintained a top ten spot in the D2Baseballnews.com poll at No. 9.

ALUMNI UPDATE
2005 Colorado Mesa Maverick Sergio Romo signed a one-year, three million dollar deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Romo spent the first nine seasons of his big league career with the San Francisco Giants and was recently competed in the World Baseball Classic for Team Mexico, his second WBC appearance.

ON DECK
Colorado Mesa will head out on the road for the next two weeks. The will open the road swing at Regis, the second place team in the RMAC this week. Series will open on Friday at 3pm.
