GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa men's lacrosse team clinched at least a share of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference title after a hard fought, 15-9 win over the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves on Friday evening at Walker Field.
The Mavericks took an early 2-0 lead after a
Reece Callies man-up goal and a
Jack Griffin goal. Callies' goal was his 18
th of the season and was assisted by
Steve Brandenburg while it was Griffin's 21
st of the year.
CSU-Pueblo evened the match scoring the next two goals but the Mavericks took the lead heading into the second period on a
Jake Douglas goal with 34 seconds left in the quarter.
The ThunderWolves took the lead in the second period of play after a three goal run to take a 5-4 lead with 7:56 left in the half.
Colorado Mesa closed the half on a four-goal flurry of their own to take an 8-5 lead into the break.
In the second half, the Mavericks limited the ThunderWolves to just four goals while scoring seven of their own.
Steve Brandenburg scored three goals in the contest to take his season total to 47.
Douglas added two goals as did Griffin and
Calen Ketcham. In all, 10 different Mavericks scored goals in the contest.
Senior
Brady George led the defensive unit with three groundball pickups and five caused turnovers.
Michael Marino was 15-for-22 on his faceoff opportunities.
Colorado Mesa will close out the weekend with a bout with Adams State at 1pm with a chance to clinch the RMAC Title outright.
