Ben Garcia earned his 100
th career win after sweeping a doubleheader at Fort Lewis Sunday (April 2).
The Mavericks won game one 17-1 and game two 9-8.
In the opening game, CMU scored 17 runs on 12 hits, one error and 10 walks. Only five (three doubles, two homeruns) of the 12 hits were for extra bases.
The Mavericks scored in four of the five innings, including seven runs in both the third and fourth innings.
Jessica Boruff hit a grand slam in her only at-bat in the fourth inning.
AnnMarie Torres and
Brooke Hodgson each finished with three RBI's apiece.
McKenzie Surface earned the win allowing one run on three hits.
Surface also earned the win in game two, giving up eight runs, seven earned, with 10 strikeouts and 15 hits.
Fort Lewis out-hit Colorado Mesa 15-12 in game two, but 11 of the Skyhawks 15 hits were singles.
The Mavericks struck first scoring on a sac fly in the second, and the Skyhawks scored one run on an error in the third.
Andy Hancock gave the Mavs a 3-1 lead with a double left to left field that scored two in the fourth.
Kelli Mrofcza hit a three-run homer as part of a four-run fifth inning for CMU.
The Skyhawks tied the game at 7-7 with six runs in the fifth, including a three-run homer by Angelique Elemen.
The Mavericks capitalized on one error and a passed ball to plate two runs in the top of the ninth.
The Skyhawks rallied for one run in the bottom of the ninth, but the Mavericks held on for the extra inning win.
The game was the first extra-inning game Mesa has played this season.
Colorado Mesa (28-4, 21-2) will host Black Hills State in a four-game series April 8-9.
