Mavs Head to Denver for Showdown

Colorado Mesa will embark on a two week, eight game road swing and open up the trip with the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's second place team in the Regis Rangers. The Rangers opened their season against one of the region's top teams in Angelo State where they went 1-2 in the three-game set. They rebounded by taking five of their next seven games.

The Rangers have one of the top players in the conference in outfielder Josh Newell. Newell leads the RMAC in batting average at .467 and has a RMAC-leading 16 doubles. Max Fabricant is also a threat at the plate with a .379 average and is 8-for-9 stealing bases.

Regis features one of the top starters and closers in the confernce on their staff. Staff ace Noah Gotsis is 5-1 with a 3.20 ERA and a .259 opponents batting average. Gitsis handed the Mavericks the loss in last season's third game of the series. Closer Patrick Kenny is second in the RMAC with six saves and has a 1.91 ERA.

LAST WEEKEND
Colorado Mesa completed the unconventional four-game sweep over the weekend. They took both games from Colorado Christian and both from Colorado Mines during the RMAC Pod weekend at Suplizio Field. The Mavericks batted .264 with eight double, two triples, and four homers on the weekend. The staff compiled a 4.75 ERA with 41 strikeouts and just 11 walks.

SCOUTING THE RANGERS
Regis is currently second in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings behind Colorado Mesa and were ranked seventh in the most recent NCBWA South Central Region rankings. The Rangers boast the top batting average in the conference with a .326 batting average, just one point higher than Colorado Mesa. They also enter with the second best team ERA in the conference with a 5.56 ERA. 

WATCH ME WHIP
Sophomore pitcher Kyle Leahy has been flat out dominant this season, in fact he doesnt give up very many baserunners period. Leahy ranks fourth nationally in WHIP (walks plus hits over innings pitched) which indicates how many base runners you allow an inning. The Erie native has a WHIP of 0.83, just shy of the national leader Stephen Young of Point Loma who sports a 0.74 WHIP.

ON-BASE MACHINE
Senior PJ Gonzalez has assumed the leadoff spot in the Colorado Mesa lineup. The Las Vegas native is currently riding a 29 game on-base streak and has a team best .496 on-base percentage, good enough for second best in the conference and 51st nationally.

SCORE SIX
All of Colorado Mesa's eight losses have come when they score less than six runs. They are 4-8 when they score five runs or less and 22-0 when they eclipse the six run mark.

WE'RE GOING STREAKING
The Mavericks are currently riding a 13 game winning streak that dates back to a 3-2 win at Point Loma on March 20. It is the longest streak the Mavericks have had since they won 21 in a row back in 2015.

STRIKEOUT-TO-WALKS
Colorado Mesa moved up to third in the country in strikeout to walk ratio at 3.61. The Mavericks have struck out 303 batters and walked just 84. This past weekend the struck out 41 batters while walking just 11.  

NATIONAL RANKINGS
The Mavericks climbed another four spots in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll to No. 11. They remained steady in the Perfect Game poll at No. 12 but jumped up to No. 5 in the D2Baseballnews.com poll. The Mavericks also checked back into the NCBWA National poll at No. 24.

ALUMNI UPDATE
2005 Colorado Mesa Maverick Sergio Romo signed a one-year, three million dollar deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Romo spent the first nine seasons of his big league career with the San Francisco Giants and was recently competed in the World Baseball Classic for Team Mexico, his second WBC appearance.

ON DECK
Colorado Mesa will continue there road trip with a four-game series with Adams State in Alamosa. The Grizzlies are currently in the conference cellar with a 4-16 mark in the RMAC.
