RMAC Opener this Weekend

LAST WEEKEND
Colorado Mesa split for the second straight weekend, this time against 14th ranked Cal Baptist. The Lancers took the opening two games while the Mavericks claimed the final two. CMU batted .291 in the series and had a 4.25 ERA on the mound against the Lancers.

SCOUTING THE COUGARS
Colorado Christian finished the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 6-8 record. They took two of three games from NCBWA regionally ranked Rogers State and Oklahoma Panhandle. Brandon Hesselberg leads CCU at the plate with a .400 batting average and a .472 on-base percentage while Jarrod Rivera is the top pitcher as a reliever. He has a 0.00 ERA in 16.2 innings of work with 13 strikeouts.

RMAC HONOR
Colorado Mesa's JR McDermott was named the RMAC Pitcher of the Week after his outing against Cal Baptist. He allowed two runs on four hits and struck out nine in the Mavericks 6-2 win.

SANDY
Junior Tyler Sandoval has turned into a tru utility man for the Mavericks. Sandoval has been the backup catcher and has also pitched this season. He is batting .385 and hit his first collegiate home run against Cal Baptist. He has also pitched 1.1 innings in one appearance.

LEAHY
Sophomore righthander Kyle Leahy has arguably been the most consistent pitcher this season. Leahy is 2-0 with a 1.12 ERA and opponents are hitting just .233 off of him.

HOMESTAND
The Mavericks will close out their opening 12-game homestand with the RMAC opening series with Colorado Christian. So far, they have gone 4-4 at home.

400 AND COUNTING
After the close of the weekend the Mavericks have achieved an interesting feat. They have not been shutout at home in 400 games. The last time they were shutout at home, they were also no-hit (February 14, 2004 vs. Western Oregon).

NATIONAL RANKINGS
The Mavericks fell in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper rankings to No. 24 and they also fell three spots to No. 8 in the Perfect Game poll. They checked in at No. 10 in the D2BaseballNews.com poll and remained on the outside looking in in the NCBWA poll.

PLAYING TIME
The Mavericks had 23 players that received at least one at-bat and 16 that received double-digit at-bats in the first 12 games of the season.

ALUMNI UPDATE
2015 Colorado Mesa Maverick Sergio Romo recently signed a one-year, three million dollar deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Romo spent the first nine seasons of his big league career with the San Francisco Giants and was recently named to the World Baseball Classic roster for Team Mexico, his second WBC appearance.

Colorado Mesa will head out on the road to take on first-year program UCCS in Colorado Springs in a four-game set.
