COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado Mesa dropped a 4-3 decision to UCCS and had to settle for a series split with the Mountain Lions on Sunday at Spurgeon Field in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
The Mavericks fell behind early in the first inning after trailing 2-0.
Outfielder
Keenan Eaton hit his first homerun as a Maverick a three-run shot to center field. The home run gave the Mavericks the 3-2 lead after four innings of play.
UCCS evened the game at 3-3 in the sixth inning on a Efrain Medina RBI single.
The Mountain Lions had an opportunity to go-ahead in the seventh. With runners on second and third and one out,
Bligh Madris induced a fly ball to right field.
PJ Gonzalez made the catch and gunned down Matt McDermott at the plate who was tagging up from third.
UCCS scored the go-ahead run in the next inning on a Colin Ludwig RBI single.
Madris and
Tyler Sandoval each finished with two hits for the Mavericks.
Senior
Tyler Day got the start and gave the Mavericks a chance to win. Day went five and a third innings and allowed three runs on five hits and struck out seven while not factoring into the decision.
Madris was also tagged with the loss. He allowed one run (unearned) on two hits, and struck out one in an inning and two-thirds of work.
Colorado Mesa's record drops to 13-7 and 6-2 in the RMAC while UCCS improves to 10-9 on the season and 5-3 in the conference.
The Mavericks will head out to Southern California during their conference bye week next weekend. They will take on Point Loma on Monday March 20 in a doubleheader.
