COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado Mesa came from behind to take game one of the series with UCCS 10-8 on Friday afternoon at Spurgeon Field in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference baseball contest.
Redshirt sophomore
Bligh Madris had one of his best offensive days as a Maverick at the plate. Madris hit for the cycle, driving in two and scoring a pair of runs. The Las Vegas native doubled in the first, singled in the fifth, homered in the seventh, and tripled in the ninth.
The last player to hit for the cycle was
Alex Fife who accomplished that feat on April 10, 2015 against the Regis Rangers in Denver.
Colorado Mesa (12-5, 5-0 RMAC) took an early 4-0 lead but the Mountain Lions battled back to tie it at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth. UCCS (8-8, 3-2 RMAC) would take their first lead of the game after scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-5 lead.
The Mavericks fought back and evened the score at 8-8 after scoring three runs in the top of the seventh. They took the lead in the top of the ninth with a pair of runs.
Sophomore
Josh Shapiro ended the game 3-for-5 with a triple, a run and two runs driven in while fellow outfielder
PJ Gonzalez also finished with three hits.
Brick Paskiewicz earned the win in relief. Paskiewicz (2-0) threw the final two innings of shutout baseball giving up just two walks and struck out five Mountain Lions.
Colorado Mesa and UCCS will be back in action tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
