Mavericks and Mountain Lions Split Doubleheader

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado Mesa and UCCS split a pair of games on Saturday (Mar. 11) at Spurgeon Field in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference baseball action.
 
In the first game of the day, the Mountain Lions scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and the Mavericks couldn't recover in a 6-5 win for UCCS.
 
Colorado Mesa scored one in the top of the sixth inning but that was all the closer they would get in the game.
 
The Mavericks outhit the Mountain Lions but three costly errors gave UCCS four unearned runs.
 
PJ Gonzalez was 1-for-3 with a two-run double in the first inning to lead the Maverick attack.
 
Chris Ramirez took the loss for Colorado Mesa. Ramirez (2-1) allowed six runs (two earned) on five hits and struck out seven in four and two-thirds innings of work.
 
The loss snapped the Mavericks seven game winning streak.
 
In the nightcap, sophomore righthander Kyle Leahy pitched a complete game shutout in an 8-0 win for Colorado Mesa.
 
Leahy (4-0) scattered five hits and struck out four and needed just 80 pitches in his seven innings of work.
 
The Mavericks struck early in the first inning with four runs highlighted by RBI doubles by Andrew Contreras and Kyle Serrano.
 
Serrano finished the game 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and a run driven in.
 
Colorado Mesa's record moves to 13-6 and 6-1 in the RMAC while UCCS goes to .500 at 9-9 and 4-3 in the conference.
 
The two teams will complete the series tomorrow with a nine-inning game at noon.
