ST. GEORGE, UTAH – The Colorado Mesa University softball team scored three runs in the top of the seventh to defeat Hawaii Hilo 6-5 Thursday (Feb. 9). CMU improves to 5-0 on the year.
The Vulcans scored two runs in the bottom of the first with a single by Kaci Freudenberge that drove in both runs.
Zoe Pakes reached on a double, advanced to third on a single by
Kaila Jacobi and then scored the Mavericks first run on an error.
Hilo capitalized on two errors in the bottom of the second to score two more runs and extend its lead to 4-1.
Maggie Manwarren and
AnnMarie Torres each hit singles to lead off the third inning and both came around to score on a two-out double by
Brooke Hodgson.
Kaci Freudenberge recorded her third RBI of the game with a lead-off homer in the third to give the Vulcans a 5-3 lead.

AnnMarie Torres hit a single in the top of the seventh. Manwarren scored on a double by
Baylee Boren, and Torres tied the game on a single by Alex Dufour. Boren scored the game-winning run on a ground out to second base by
Brooke Hodgson.
McKenzie Surface earned the win after replacing
Andy Hancock in the third inning. Surface struck out nine and allowed one hit and one walk.
CMU led 10-5 in hits.
Colorado Mesa (5-0) will face Concordia (Calif.) and California Baptist Friday (Feb. 10).
