GRAND JUNCTION, COLO. – The Colorado Mesa University shot 7-percent (2-27) from behind the arc in a 84-79 loss to New Mexico Highlands Friday (Feb. 24).
The Cowboys shot 48-percent (13-27) from behind the arc.
Highlands led 40-36 at the break and extended its lead to a game-high 19 points, 65-46, with 11:32 left in the second.
The Mavericks responded with a 17-3 run to cut the lead to just five, 68-63, with 5:31 remaining.
James Sylvester drained a pair of free throws to cut the NMHU lead to three, 76-73, with 2:24.
The Mavericks would make just two baskets from the field, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer, the remainder of the game.
James Sylvester scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Mavericks.
Eimer Lopez scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the double-double.
Ron Lawton led five Cowboys in double figures with 18 points.
NMHU shot 48-percent (29-60) from the field, and CMU shot 44-percent (33-74).
Mesa dominated play in the paint out-scoring Highlands 56-28.
CMU scored 29 points off 24 NMHU turnovers.
Colorado Mesa (7-20, 6-15) will play its final game of the season against CSU-Pueblo Saturday (Feb. 25).
