GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa and Cal Baptist fought the cold, snowy weather on Friday afternoon at Suplizio Field in the doubleheader split.
In game one, Cal Baptist pounded out 11 hits and benefitted from a five run sixth inning in an 8-5 win over the Mavericks.
The Lancers had five runs on four hits and left two runners on in their big sixth inning rally.
Kyle Serrano and
PJ Gonzalez provided the offense for the Mavericks with each hitting a home run in the game. No Maverick had more than one hit in the game.
Jarrett Bott was tagged with the loss for the Mavericks after allowing two runs on one hit in just a third of an inning of work.
In the nightcap, sophomore
JR McDermott pitched six innings and allowed just four hits in a 6-2 win for Colorado Mesa.
McDermott finished with a season-high nine strikeouts and just two walks. Seven of the first nine outs he recorded came way of strikeout.
The Mavericks outhit Cal Baptist 9-7 in the game including three extra base-hits.
Tyler Sandoval hit his first collegiate home run in the Mavericks four-run fourth inning. Sandoval's shot was a two-run homer that cleared the Big O Tires sign in left center field.
Will Dixon and
Kyle Serrano each had two hits in the game.
The Mavericks will go for the series split tomorrow with a single nine-inning game beginning at a new time of 1:00pm. The two teams will try to play in warmer temperatures with the later start.
