Four Games on Tap with Lancers

LAST WEEKEND
Colorado Mesa split the four-game series with Montana State Billings at Suplizio Field. The Mavericks took the first two games but fell in the third and fourth games of the series. They batted just .290 on the weekend and scored just two more runs and had a 5.82 ERA to the 4.78 ERA the Yellowjackets had.

SCOUTING THE LANCERS
After being swept the opening weekend by Cal State Los Angeles, the Lancers have won the past seven in a row including a four-game series with Great Northwest Conference favorite Northwest Nazarene in the middle of the week last week. They also took all three from California rival Cal State Dominguez Hills. Cal Baptist was picked to win the PacWest Conference after winning the conference title last season. 

AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS
The Mavericks 3-1 against ranked opponents this season with the 3-1 series win against Dixie State. They are 14-6 over the past three seasons against opponents ranked in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll.

LEFTY ARMS
Chris Ramirez showed promise in his start against Montana State Billings. The junior struck out 12 including the first nine outs of the game for the Yellowjackets. Eli Thornquist also struck out five in his two appearances out of the bullpen. Combined the duo struck out 17 and allowed just six hits.

MIDDLE OF THE ORDER
Kyle Serrano, Bligh Madris, and PJ Gonzalez produced 20 of the Mavericks 38 hits in the serries split of Montana State Billings. None of the other 18 players that had at-bats produced more than three hits in the series.

AGAINST LEFTIES
Colorado Mesa is hitting just .182 (8-for-44) against left handed pitchers on the young season. Cal Baptist is slated to start a left handed pitcher but has two on the roster. 

HOMESTAND
The Mavericks are right in the middle of their first of two 12 game home stands this season. They have started this stand out with a 2-2 record. The other 12 gamer comes in late April. 

ALUMNI UPDATE
2005 Colorado Mesa Maverick Sergio Romo recently signed a one-year, three million dollar deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Romo spent the first nine seasons of his big league career with the San Francisco Giants and was recently named to the World Baseball Classic roster for Team Mexico, his second WBC appearance.

PRESEASON ALL-RMAC
Colorado Mesa had four players named to the Preseason All-RMAC team. Sophomore JR McDermott was named the RMAC Preseason Pitcher of the Year while his catcher Kyle Serrano was also named to the team. Infielders Zach McLeod and Andrew Contreras were also named to the team.

OTHER PRESEASON TEAMS
JR McDermott was also named to the NCBWA Preseason All-American First Team after his tremendous freshman campaign. Kyle Serrano and Zach McLeod were each named to the NCBWA Preseason All-South Central Region Team as well.

NATIONAL RANKINGS
The Mavericks remain in the Collegiate Baseball, Perfect Game and D2Baseballnews.com National polls but fell out of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll. 

ON DECK
Colorado Mesa will open the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action at home with a four-game series with Colorado Christian beginning on Friday March 3.
