Mavericks Split Doubleheader

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 12 Colorado Mesa baseball team earned a doubleheader split with Montana State Billings on Saturday afternoon at Suplizio Field in non-conference action.
 
In game two of the series, the Mavericks exploded for nine runs in the fourth inning and withstood a late Billings charge in a 13-6 win in the day's opener.
 
Kyle Leahy got the emergency start as scheduled game two starter Tyler Day as he came down with the flu. Leahy earned the win going five innings and allowing one run on five hits, walked none and struck out five.
 
Kyle Serrano finished the game with three hits and two runs scored while Bligh Madris went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
 
Freshman Trevin Reynolds hit his first collegiate home run with a two-run shot as a part of the nine run fourth.
 
In the nightcap, Colorado Mesa outhit the Yellowjackets but committed two costly errors in a 9-5 loss to Montana State Billings.
 
Maverick starter Chris Ramirez struck out the first nine batters he faced and 11 of the first 12 batters. In that span he also allowed two runs on two hits and walked three.
 
Ramirez finished the game throwing five innings and allowed five runs on five hits, walked three and struck out 12 and didn't factor into the decision.
 
He gave way to the bullpen that allowed four runs on two hits and struck out three.
 
John Beaudrie was tagged with the loss and goes to 0-1.
 
Kyle Serrano and Bligh Madris continued their torrid start to the season. Serrano finished 3-for-3 and improved his batting average to .677 while Madris went 3-for-4 with a home run and moved his average to .545.
 
The two teams will play a single nine-inning game beginning at a new time of 10am as they are trying to dodge weather that is scheduled to impact the area.
