Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Bryce Reedy (Sports Information Intern)

Skyhawks Fly Past Mavericks

Colorado Mesa University traveled down to Durango, Colo. to take on No. 15 Fort Lewis College on Friday night. The Mavericks kept it a two-score game in the first half, but when the final buzzer sounded it was the Skyhawks walking away with a 96-80 victory.

FLC jumped right out of the gate with hot shooting against the Mavericks defense. The Skyhawks started a perfect 7-7 from the field to take an early 15-5 lead. CMU would climb back into the game to take a 27-24 lead with eight minutes to go in the first half. FLC was not going to be down for long however, as they would rally off seven quick points in a row to take a 31-27 lead. They kept that momentum going in the final minutes of the half to take a 46-40 lead into the locker room.

In the second half, the Mavericks were able to cut the lead down to three (66-63) with 10 minutes remaining. However, the Skyhawks kicked it into another gear for those final 10 minutes, outscoring CMU 30-17 over that time. A 10-2 run in the final four minutes of the game sealed the Mavericks fate.

Offensively the Mavericks had a rough night from the field when it was all said and done. Despite shooting 58 percent (14-24) from the field in the first half, the Mavericks were only able to shoot 38 percent in the second (14-36) to give them an overall of 46 percent for the game. This included going a mere 10-28 from behind the three-point line.

Meanwhile, the Skyhawks' offense was clicking throughout the contest. They finished the night shooting 55 percent for the game, including going 12-23 from long distance. This included three players scoring at least 20 points on the night.

CMU was led offensively by Emilio Acedo, who finished with 22 points on the night (13 points in the second half). Connor Nichols was second on the team with 19 followed by CJ Davis with 13.

With the loss, CMU moves to 5-4 overall on the season and 1-2 in the RMAC. The Mavericks will now travel down to Alamosa, Colo. to take on Adams State University on Saturday night. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
