Colorado Mesa University survived the furious Grizzlies comeback on Saturday night to hold on for their sixth victory of the season. The Mavericks led by as much as 26 points in the second half, but Adams State University was able to fight their way back to force overtime between the two teams. However, the Mavericks scored the first five points of the extra period to help seal the 90-87 victory.

CMU was coming off a tough game against Fort Lewis College, and it showed in the opening seven minutes. The Grizzlies were able to build a nine-point (19-10) lead. A 33-10 run by the Mavericks over the final 13 minutes of the first half turned the tides for CMU however and gave CMU a 43-29 halftime lead.

The Mavericks continued their run into the opening part of the second half, to take a 60-34 lead for the largest of the game. However, the Grizzlies were not going to go away on their home court. Over the final 15 minutes, ASU would outscore CMU 47-21 to tie the game up at 81 to send the game into overtime.

Despite the fierce comeback, the Mavericks were able to recover and take advantage in the extra period. A two-point jumper by
Emilio Acedo and a three-point shot by
CJ Davis gave the Mavericks enough of a lead in the overtime to take the three-point victory on the road.

Defensively as a team the Mavericks came to play on the night. They kept the Grizzlies to a mere 38 percent shooting as a team from the field, and only 28 percent from long range. They also forced ASU into 27 turnovers on the night, which the Mavericks were able to turn into 30 points.

The Mavericks were carried offensively by Acedo and
Connor Nichols on the night. Acedo finished with a game high 28 points (which was a new Maverick career high) on 9-18 shooting from the field and 5-10 shooting from behind the three-point arc. Nichols was second on the team with 24 points on a solid shooting performance as well (10-16 from the field).

With the win the Mavericks move to 6-4 overall on the year, and an even 2-2 in the conference. Next weekend, the Mavericks will be home for two more RMAC games. The first is against CSU-Pueblo on Friday, followed by New Mexico Highlands University on Saturday. Both are set to tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
