One day after the Thanksgiving holiday, Colorado Mesa University was looking to extend their win streak to three games against MidAmerica Nazarene University. Coming into the contest the Pioneers had won seven of their first eight games of the season. However, that didn't matter to the Mavericks as they cruised to a 95-65 victory.
Â
CMU jumped out to a 16-2 lead in the first three minutes of the half. The Mavericks continued to roll to take a 23-point lead into the half.
Damon Dubots led the game with 19 points at the half thanks to a perfect shooting performance. Dubots finished 5-5 from the field and 8-8 from the free throw line in the half.
Â
The second half was another strong one for the Maverick offense. As a team, they shot 6-12 from behind the arc to help win them the half 40-33.
Tyler Converse went 3-4 off the bench from behind the three-point line in the half.
Â
CMU shot 52 percent from behind the arc on the night, finishing 13-25. They also used the free throw line to their advantage once again, going 20-26 from the charity stripe.
Â
Four of the five Maverick starters finished in double figures, with Dubots leading all scorers with 21 points.
Connor Nichols finished with his first double-double on the season, scoring 15 points and corralling 10 rebounds.
Emilio Acedo and
CJ Davis combined for 23 points on a combined 6-10 shooting from deep.
Â
The Mavericks offense was not the only thing that was clicking on Friday night. Their defense played a huge role in the victory as well. They held the Pioneers to a mere 28.8 percent shooting from the field. This included allowing great perimeter defense, forcing the Pioneers to go 3-19 from long range.
Â
CMU's defense forced the Pioneers into committing 17 turnovers in the contest, which led to 25 points for the Mavericks in transition.
Â
With the victory the Mavericks move to 3-2 overall on the season. This is the first time since the 2015-16 season that CMU has a record over .500.
Â
Next up for the Mavericks will be Central Methodist University on Saturday night to conclude the Holiday Inn-Airport Thanksgiving Classic. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Brownson Arena.
