Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Bryce Reedy (Sports Information Intern)

Bench Plays Huge Role in Fourth Straight Victory

For the third time in the last four games, the Mavericks were able to score at least 90 points in their game against Central Methodist University on Saturday night. And for the fourth consecutive game, Colorado Mesa University was able to walk away with a victory. This time it was a 93-75 win over the Eagles.

Through the first eight minutes of the game, it looked like the Eagles were going to continue their unbeaten season. They had a 20-14 lead with just over 12 minutes to play. But over the next four minutes, the tables turned for the two teams. CMU went on to score 13 unanswered points to take a 27-20 lead. The Mavericks took their seven-point lead into the locker room, up 48-41.

In the second half, the Mavericks never forfeited the lead to the visiting Eagles. CMU finished the game with an 18-point victory, which was their largest lead in the game.

Defensively the Mavericks once again played aggressively against a tough undefeated opponent. They defended the three-point line all night long, forcing the Eagles to take contested jumpers from long range. They finished the night going 4-20 from deep. As a team, the Eagles shot only 43 percent from the field, despite coming into the weekend shooting 54 percent from the field.

Offensively the Mavericks shared the wealth on the night, finishing with six players in double figures. Emilio Acedo tied with a game-high 23 points thanks to five made shots from downtown. CJ Davis was second for the Mavericks with 16 followed by Michael Skinner off the bench with 13.

The Maverick bench played a huge role in the victory as well. They finished with 37 points on 12-19 shooting from the field. Skinner, Jerome LaNeir and Kolton Peterson all finished with double-digit points off the bench.

CMU now has a 4-2 record for the season, and are riding a four-game win streak into the beginning of RMAC play. Next up will be a two-game homestand against Western State on Friday and Westminster on Saturday. Both have tip-offs set for 7:30 p.m. at Brownson Arena following the women's basketball games that take place at 5:30 p.m.
