Regional Ranking:
The NCAA announced their regional rankings on Wednesday (Oct. 18). Colorado Mesa University comes in at third in the South Central region with their 11-2-1 record. They are currently behind St. Edward's and Midwestern State. They sit one spot ahead of RMAC rival Colorado School of Mines.
National Ranking:
The NCAA came out with their national DII soccer rankings on Tuesday (Oct. 17). Last week the Mavericks came in ranked 20th in the nation. After a week where CMU won two games and scored a season high 10 goals in those games, the Maverick move down a spot to 21st. RMAC rival Colorado School of Mines doesn't move in the rankings and remains at 15th.
October 20 vs. Colorado Christian:
Final Push:
The men's soccer season has come to its final push these next two weeks before the RMAC playoffs begin on Halloween night. Colorado Mesa currently sits in second place in the RMAC with a 7-2-1 conference record. They sit currently two games behind Colorado School of Mines, who has a 9-1 RMAC record, as well as holds the tie breaker over the Mavericks with their 2-1 win back in September.
10 Goals in Two Games:
CMU put up 10 goals last week against Westminster and South Dakota School of Mines. That was the most goals the Mavericks have scored in a two-game stretch since 2012 when CMU scored nine goals in two games. This included a seven-goal performance against Colorado Christian on the road. The team was led by
Moshe Perez who finished with two goals and an assist on the week.
Bottom of the Conference:
The Mavericks get to play the Cougars twice over the next two weeks. CCU currently sits at the bottom of the RMAC with a 1-7-2 conference record. The Cougars haven't come away with a win since Sept. 13 when they beat MSU at home.
Last Season:
When these two teams met back in 2016, the Cougars jumped out to an early 1-0 lead at Walker Field. CCU took that lead into the half where they were looking to come away with the upset on the road. However, the Mavericks would score three goals in the second half to get the 3-1 victory. CMU outshot the Cougars 28-6 in the game.
Players to Watch:
Malik Mennana has been a hot contributor for the Mavericks over the last two weeks. Over his last four games he has three goals and two assists for CMU. As for the Cougars, CMU needs to watch out for Blake Goodale who has three goals in just nine games.
October 22 vs. MSU Denver:
Battle for Second Place:
The Mavericks and the Roadrunners are currently separated by only half a game for second place entering the weekend. The two teams play each other twice over the next four games, which leads to two games determining who will be the number two team in the RMAC come playoff time.
Streaking Roadrunners:
MSU has won four of their last five contests to help move them into third place in the conference. This included a win on the road against No. 20 Colorado School of Mines. Over those five games they have outscored their opponents 7-3 and have shut out the opponent in all four of their victories.
Last Season:
In 2016, these two teams met three times over the course of the year. In the teams two regular season matchups, the teams tied 0-0 when down in Denver but the Mavericks won the game 3-0 when at Walker Field. In the game,
Slater Elkind scored his first goal of the year and
Roy Abergil scored twice. The two teams then met again in the RMAC playoffs where the Mavericks were victorious in a shootout when Perez buried the game winner at Walker Field.
Senior Night:
This is the final regular season home game for the Mavericks this season. That means it is senior night for the following players:
James Gutierrez,
Slater Elkind,
Trentin Atkin,
Malik Mennana and
Roberto Diaz.
Players to Watch:
Look for Perez to try and get this game out of reach early. In the game against Westminster he was able to put CMU up in the first minute of action, so don't be surprised if they go to him early and often to try and get an early lead. As for the Roadrunners, their offense is led by Nils Runnberg. Runnberg has six goals on the year which is tied with Perez for second in the conference.
