Richardson, Texas- Battling the hot conditions and the number one ranked team in the country, the Colorado Mesa University men's soccer team capped off their Texas trip with a 6-1 defeat at the hands of Midwestern State.

Coming into this game, the Mustangs were coming off a 5-0 win against Cal State Easy Bay and were looking to continue that form against the Mavs. The Mavs were looking for a much similar result to last year where they battled the eventual national champions to a 1-1 draw.

The game started in the favor of the Mustangs though, as they would score the first goal of the game just three minutes into the contest.

The Mustangs would continue to ramp up the pressure as their high press was too much to handle for the Mavs as they would score two more goals, both in the eighth minute of play.

With the score now 3-0, the Mustangs would not let their foot off the gas pedal which would prove costly as they would go down to ten men after Davis Mays received red card, giving the Mavs an opportunity to get back into the game.

However, the Mustangs did not let the red card affect them as they would march down the field and put in their fourth goal of the game, all before the 20-minute mark.

The Mavs would get one goal back after the hydration break as Richie Tabares Ochoa would score a wonderful goal off a free kick to put the Mavs on the board. After some back and forth, the half would end with the Mustangs firmly in control.

The second half would see more of the same from the Mustangs as they would tack on two more goals in the first ten minutes. With the game out of reach, both coaches would empty their benches to give players more opportunities to play as time wound down and the game concluded. 

The Mustangs outshot the Mavs 14-10 with Juan David Valencia Vacca leading the charge for Midwestern State as both of his shots led to goals. Tabares Ochoa scored his second goal of the season while him and Justin Ibrahim led the team in shots with three.

The Mavs return home for a two-game stretch with their first being on Sept. 3 against the University of Jamestown. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Community Hospital Unity Field.
