Last Second Shot Sinks Mavericks

GRAND JUNCTION, COLO. – Elijah Sanders scored a put back basket with 1.8 seconds remaining to lift the Regis men's basketball team to a 74-72 win over Colorado Mesa Saturday (Jan. 7).

The two teams traded the lead for the majority of the first half before the Rangers went on an 11-0 run over a 2:30 span late in the half on its way to a 44-33 edge at the half.

Dekter Sienko drained a pair of free throws with 14:19 left in the second to give RU its largest lead of the game, 55-40.

The Mavericks got back in the game compliments of a 14-2 run midway through the half.

Tanner Riley, who was a major factor in the Mavericks comeback, gave CMU its first lead of the second half with a free throw with 6:12 remaining.

Christian Little gave the Regis a one-point lead, 72-71, with just under two minutes to go.

After missing the first, Kabir West made his second free throw to tie the game at 72 with 42 seconds remaining.

The Mavericks originally grabbed the rebound off a missed Ranger 3-pointer but couldn't control it giving possession back to Regis.

Kevin Metoyer attempted a late 3-pointer that missed but was put back by Elijah Sanders with under two seconds remaining.

The Mavericks full court pass went out of bounds.

The Mavericks out-scored the Rangers 39-30 in the second half.

Colorado Mesa shot 19-of-27 from the free throw line thanks to 25 Regis fouls. RU was 5-of-8 from the line.

CMU led 42-22 in points in the paint and 31-19 in points off the bench.

James Sylvester led the Mavericks with 16 points, and Eimer Lopez chipped in 14.
