GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa University volleyball team opened the season with a pair of losses to ranked opponents at the Courtyard by Marriott Oredigger Classic on Friday.
In the season opener, the Mavericks fell to sixth-ranked Wayne State Nebraska 3-1 (22-25, 22-25, 25-17, 22-25). They had leads in every set but could only secure the third set of the match.
Blocks and service errors plagued CMU as Wayne State finished the match with 14 total blocks and the Mavericks committed nine service errors.
Sophomore
MacKenzie Edwards paced the Mavericks with double-double, finishing with a game-high 17 kills and 15 digs.
Gabriela Dias and freshman
Katie Scherr each finished the match with double-digit kills. Scherr hit a team-high .367 in the opener.
In the second match of the day, Dias had a game-high 15 kills but the Mavericks dropped a 3-1 (18-25, 11-25, 25-20, 14-20) decision to former RMAC member No. 13 Nebraska-Kearney.
Edwards was the only other Maverick in double-digit kills with 10.
Freshman Sam Ritter, playing in her first collegiate match, appeared in just three of the four sets for CMU but led the team in assists with 25.
Sophomore
Taylor Woods extended her double-digit digs streak to 27 after reaching the mark in both matches on the day.
The Mavericks will play South Central Region foe Dallas Baptist and Indianapolis tomorrow beginning at 10am.
