GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa volleyball team pushed their win streak to eight after sweeping Westminster 3-0 (25-11, 25-16, 25-23) on Saturday night in Brownson Arena in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opening weekend.
The Mavericks won the first set 25-11 after hitting .500, thanks in large part to the seven kills by
Gabriela Dias. Dias had 10 attacks in the set and hit .700 and added two digs and assisted on a block.
Sophomore
Taylor Woods had four service aces in the set and served the final six points of the opening set.
In the second set, CMU hit just .167 but benefitted from nine Griffin attack errors in a 25-16 win.
Mackenzie Edwards had four kills in the set while
Katie Scherr and Gabi Dias each had three.
Westminster made the third and final set of the match close after Savannah Ipsen served five straight points, but the Mavericks held on for a 25-23 set and match win.
Dias finished with a match-high 15 kills and hit .542 in the match. She accounted for 16 points in the match.
Senior
Ali Svorinic finished with 39 assists (13 assists/set) and added nine digs.
Woods finished with 14 digs while senior
Kricket Adleman added nine.
The Mavericks improved to 8-2 on the season and 2-0 in the RMAC while the Griffins dropped to 2-8 and 0-2 in RMAC action.
Colorado Mesa will be on the road at Regis and Chadron State next weekend. Their next home matches will be on October 7-8 against CSU-Pueblo and New Mexico Highlands.
