DENVER, Colo. – Mackenzie Edwards and freshman
Allison Smith attempted to carry the Mavericks to their ninth straight win but fell short in the end falling 3-2 (22-25, 25-23, 28-26, 25-27, 9-15) to the Regis Rangers on Friday evening at Regis Fieldhouse.
In the first set, errors haunted the Mavericks as they committed seven attack errors and two service errors in a 25-22 set win for the Rangers.
Alyssa Chutka and
Hattie Gianinetti each had five kills in the set.
Allison Smith provided the team a spark in the second set, leading them to a 25-23 win and tying the match at 1-1. Smith finished the set with nine kills, hitting .615 and digging two balls.
The Mavericks led 16-11 in the set but allowed Regis to climb back into the set. The Rangers tied the match at 17-17 but never led.
In set three, Colorado Mesa trailed 23-20 but scored the next three points to knot the set at 23-23 and went on to win the set 28-26. Mackenzie Edwards led CMU with five kills in the set.
In a set similar to the third, Regis claimed the fourth set 27-25 staving off set point twice late in the set. The Mavericks committed a pair of attack errors for the final two points.
In the fifth and final set, Regis led wire-to-wire in a 15-9 win taking the match. It was the Mavericks first five set match of the season while the Rangers snapped a three match skid with the win.
Edwards finished with a match-high 23 kills and completed the double-double with 12 digs. She had 26 of the Mavericks 82 total points.
The freshman Smith had a career-high 19 kills and seven digs in her second match of extended action.
Senior
Ali Svorinic finished the night with 55 assists (11/set) and a season-high 17 digs.
The Mavericks will travel to Chadron, Neb. tomorrow for 6pm first serve with Chadron State.
