GUNNISON, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa volleyball team picked up a hard fought 3-1 win over the Western State Mountaineers on Thursday evening at Paul Wright Gym in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener.
Colorado Mesa won the first set 25-20 after hitting .270 in the set. That was the best they hit all night. Mackenzie Edwards had four kills in the set while
Camille Smith had three and hit .400.
In the second set, the Mavericks trailed until late in the set.
Western called a timeout leading at the 22-21 mark of the set. The Mavericks then scored the next two points of the match to take their first lead and never trailed again, winning 25-23.
The Mountaineers dominated the third set and took it 25-11, scoring 11 straight points at one time in the set. Colorado Mesa hit a season-worst -.162 with just four kills in the set and trailed by as many as 14 points.
Colorado Mesa took the fourth set 25-14 as Western hit -.147 in the set.
Mackenzie Edwards led the Mavs with 12 kills and completed the double-double with 16 digs.
Taylor Woods finished with a team-high 17 digs.
The Mavericks will have their home opener on Saturday against Westminster in Brownson Arena.
