Complete Tournament Notes for Colorado Mesa
NCAA SOUTH CENTRAL REGIONAL AT A GLANCE
This season's NCAA South Central Regional Tournament features three teams that were in the tournament a year ago, one from the 2014 regional at Suplizio Field, and one newcomer who is making their first appearance in the tournament in their first year of eligibility.
The winner of the regional tournament will advance to the National Finals in Cary, N.C.
WEEKEND RECAP
Colorado Mesa won their third consecutive Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament Championship when they defeated CSU-Pueblo twice on championship day. After falling to the Thunderwolves the day before, the Mavericks rallied to win the next three straight games. It is the first time in conference history that a team has won the tournament three straight seasons.
NCAA SOUTH CENTRAL REGIONAL
The Mavericks were selected as the number one seed and host of this year's NCAA South Central Regional. It is the third straight season they are the top seed and are making their 13th appearance in the tournament.
FAMILIAR FOES
Five of the six teams in this year's have been to Grand Junction for the NCAA South Central Region tournament in the last two seasons. Colorado Mesa's opponent, Lubbock Christian, is the lone newcomer to the field and are eligible for the tournament for the first time this season.
PITCHING
Senior righty
Matt Allen is poised to start game one of the tournament for Colorado Mesa. Allen is coming off a weekend where he struck out a career-high 12 in his start against Adams State. He has a 6-1 record with a 2.51 ERA on the season.
AT THE PLATE
The Mavericks enjoyed one of their best weekend's at the plate. As a team, they batted .377 in the tournament with 17 doubles and stole 10 bases. They were led by all-tournament team representative
Andrew Contreras who batted .526 (10-for-19) with seven runs scored.
COACHING
Head coach
Chris Hanks won his 700th game for the Mavericks on February 19 in a 5-4 win over Cal Baptist. He has spent his entire 17 year coaching career at Colorado Mesa and has won 11 RMAC Championships and two NCAA Regional titles.
PROTECTING THE HOUSE
Suplizio Field has been very kind to the Mavericks for several seasons now. The Mavericks are 125-17 the past four seasons including the 27-5 record last season. They have not been shutout at home in 390 straight games dating back to the 2004 season (L 0-3 Western Oregon, Feb. 14).
RMAC TOURNAMENT IN 2015
Colorado Mesa claimed their second consecutive RMAC Tournament Championship, defeating MSU Denver 7-6 on a walk-off home run by
Alex Fife. It is the the Mavericks 11th RMAC Tournament Championship, most by any school in the conference.Â
REGIONAL TOURNAMENT
The Mavericks hosted the NCAA South Central Regional for the second straight season and went 1-2 in the tournament. The Mavericks fell to St. Mary's then went on to defeat St. Edward's before falling to eventual champion Angelo State.
ON DECK
The winner of the NCAA South Central Regional advances to the Division II Baseball National Championships in Cary, N.C. at the USA Baseball Training Facility. If the Mavericks are fortunate enough to win the tournament it would be their third trip to the National Championships.
