Box Score 2 GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The top seeded Colorado Mesa Mavericks rebounded to earn a spot in Saturday's RMAC Tournament Championship on Friday afternoon. The Mavericks fell in the semifinal 7-2 to CSU-Pueblo but came back to snare a 14-7 win over Colorado Mines at Suplizio Field.
Colorado Mesa fell in game one after entering the ninth inning tied at 2-2. The ThunderWolves scored five runs on four hits and one Maverick error in the top half of the ninth inning.
Tanner Herdt earned the start and pitched seven quality innings. Herdt allowed two runs on five hits, walked two and struck out 10 but didn't factor into the decision.
Senior
Tyler Ehlers was tagged for the loss in relief and fell to 4-1 on the season.
The Mavericks took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on a RBI single by
Kyle Serrano.
The score would remain that way until the ninth inning.
Serrano and
Alex Fife each had two hits in the game.
In the loser-out game later that evening, the Mavericks fell behind twice in the first three innings but scored nine unanswered runs to cruise to a 14-7 win over the Colorado Mines Orediggers.
Colorado Mesa fell behind 1-0 before even coming to the plate in the bottom half of the first inning but scored three runs to take a 3-1 lead into the second.
The Orediggers responded by scoring three runs of their own to retake the lead at 4-3 in the top of the second inning before the Mavericks erupted for five runs in the third and four runs in the fourth.
John Beaudrie helped Colorado Mesa stay in the game after a pair of pitchers struggled through the first two innings of play. Beaudrie pitched four and a third innings and allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits, walked one and struck out three to earn his first collegiate win of his career.
Sophomore shortstop
Zach McLeod had one of his best offensive showings of the season by going 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and a run driven in.
Alex Fife had two hits including his 14
th double of the season and and drove in three.
Colorado Mesa (41-11) moves on to face CSU-Pueblo tomorrow at 1pm in the RMAC Tournament Championship game. The winner will receive the RMAC's automatic bid into the NCAA South Central Regional Tournament next week.
