Complete Game Notes vs. CSU-Pueblo
WEEKEND RECAP
Colorado Mesa took three of four games from the Grizzlies of Adams State over the weekend at Suplizio FIeld. After a 12-0 win on Friday evening, the two teams played a one-run game and a two-run game on Saturday and a three-run game on Sunday. Colorado Mesa batted .336 in the series and had a 1.80 team ERA as a pitching staff. They limited the Grizzlies to a .219 team batting average and struck them out 40 times.
THE SERIES
The Mavericks and ThunderWolves have had a long standing rivalry dating back to the late 90s. The two teams have been the top two programs in the RMAC for years but the Mavericks have had the edge the last ten years, owning a 51-15 record dating back to 2006.
CSU-PUEBLO AT A GLANCE
The ThunderWolves are having an outstanding season and are considered one of the top teams in the South Central Region. After splitting with nationally ranked Lubbock Christian back on February 28, CSU-Pueblo has gone 14-2, all of which have come in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
At the plate, CSU-Pueblo leads the RMAC and ranks 12th in the country in team batting average. The are led by senior outfielder Jordan Godman who sports a .513 batting average with seven doubles, five triples and five home runs. He has been named the RMAC player of the week twice this season.
The ThunderWolves rank fourth in the RMAC in pitching with a team ERA of 5.17. That could be a little low as they are tops in the RMAC in fewest walks. Junior Brandon Conlin leads the staff with a 5.06 ERA while Cameron Weinberg leads the team with 34 strikeouts.
THEIVES
Colorado Mesa leads the RMAC in stolen bases with 49 steals in 63 attempts.
James Young III leads the Mavericks with 14 stolen bases while
John Ballard is 8-for-8 in just 19 games played.
ERA
Colorado Mesa's team ERA of 2.80 ranks No. 8 in NCAA Div. II and is behind national leader Cal Baptist who has a 2.11 ERA. Freshman
JR McDermott ranks second in the country in ERA at 0.53 just 0.02 behind national leader Placido Torres of Tusculum who sits at 0.51 in 71 innings pitched.
DEFENSE
The Maverick defense has a .976 fielding percentage on the season which is second in the RMAC and sixth in Div. II this season. They have committed just 29 errors in 33 games.
LESS THEN FIVE RUNS
When the Colorado Mesa pitching and defensive units limit opponents to less then five runs, the Mavericks are 26-2 on the season.
COACHING
Head coach
Chris Hanks won his 700th game for the Mavericks on February 19 in a 5-4 win over Cal Baptist. He has spent his entire 17 year coaching career at Colorado Mesa and has won 11 RMAC Championships and two NCAA Regional titles.
PROTECTING THE HOUSE
Suplizio Field has been very kind to the Mavericks for several seasons now. The Mavericks are 116-15 the past four seasons including the 27-5 record last season. They have not been shutout at home in 377 straight games dating back to the 2004 season (L 0-3 Western Oregon, Feb. 14).
RMAC TOURNAMENT IN 2015
Colorado Mesa claimed their second consecutive RMAC Tournament Championship, defeating MSU Denver 7-6 on a walk-off home run by
Alex Fife. It is the the Mavericks 11th RMAC Tournament Championship, most by any school in the conference.
REGIONAL TOURNAMENT
The Mavericks hosted the NCAA South Central Regional for the second straight season and went 1-2 in the tournament. The Mavericks fell to St. Mary's then went on to defeat St. Edward's before falling to eventual champion Angelo State.
ON DECK
Colorado Mesa will return home for the final four-game RMAC series of the season when they host Regis at Suplizio Field. The final three series of the regular season are all three game series within the division.
