Box ScoreTAMPA, Fla. – Colorado Mesa dropped its first game in Florida to No. 5 Tampa 12-7 Saturday (March 12).
The first half was a shootout for both teams as they traded two goals apiece over the first eight minutes. The Spartans scored the next four goals, including a natural hat-trick by Matt Bilak.
The Mavs found themselves behind after the first half 7-3.
The Mavs attempted to rally in the second but the Tampa defense did not allow back-to-back Maverick goals.
Tampa dominated the face-off circle winning 22 of 30 face-offs.
Shots on goal were close as the Spartans were able to slide past the Mavs 26-21.
Ground balls were also a close battle with the Spartans barely winning the battle 28-24.
Extra-man was strong for the Mavs as it scored on two of their four opportunities.
Tampa finished 2-for-4 on man-up opportunities.
Jack Griffin and
Reece Callies led Mesa with two goals apiece.
Zach Weaver finished the game with 14 saves in goal for CMU.
Colorado Mesa will face Saint Leo Tuesday (March 15).
