Ryan Stephan led the Mavericks with 36 points, including six 3-pointers, and 12 rebounds.
Kabir West and
Eimer Lopez each finished with 17 points, and
CJ Davis added 11 points.
The Cowboys had four players in double figures with Ron Lawton and Jonathon Mines combining for 50 points.
NMHU opened the game on a 15-2 run thanks to three consecutive 3-pointers.
CMU immediately responded with an 11-0 run to close to 15-13 midway through the half.
Highlands led for most of the half until a 3-pointer from
Nate Hawley gave Mesa its first lead of the game 33-32 with under three minutes remaining.
CJ Davis drained a 3-pointer at the end of the first to close the NMHU led to 40-36 at the break.
The Cowboys would hold the lead for the entirety of the second half, but the Mavs kept it to single digits for the most part.
Ryan Stephan made a 3-pointer with nine minutes to go to pull CMU within four 68-64.
Mesa pulled within three, 95-92, after a pair of free throws following a technical foul on Highlands with 29 seconds remaining.
Ryan Stephan drained his sixth 3-pointer of the night to pull the Mavs within two, 97-95, with 11 seconds remaining, but Highlands made both free throws on the ensuing
possession to secure the win.
CMU out-rebounded NMHU 40-33, and the Cowboys led 8-0 in blocks.
Colorado Mesa (16-7, 12-5) will play at Black Hills Friday (Feb. 12). Â
