DENVER – Colorado Mesa grabbed their first win of season beating Augustana (IL) 18-6 at Peter Barton Stadium Monday (Feb. 29).
The Mavs came out aggressively in the first half scoring 11 goals. The Mavs also held the Vikings to only one goal in the first half.
Colorado Mesa continued showing their scoring prowess in the second half with seven goals, but also allowed the Vikings to score five goals.
Penalties were an issue for the Mavs committing eight penalties for seven and a half minutes compared to the Vikings two penalties for a minute and a half minutes.
Man-down was strong for the Mavs killing off six of eight trips to the field. The Vikings man down unit was flawless killing two penalties.
Colorado Mesa won the ground ball fight scooping 36 ground balls compared to the Vikings 26 ground balls.
The Mavs dominated in the shots department winning that battle 32 to the Vikings 29.
The Mavericks also dominated face offs winning 16 of 26 face offs.
There were 14 total Mavs with at least one point in the game and 11 different goal scores for the Mavs as well.
Steve Brandenburg led the Mavs with five goals and six points.
Connor Morgan also finished with a hat trick on the day for the Mavs.
Colorado Mesa returns to action Saturday (March 12) as they face Tampa in Tampa, Fla.
